I'm interested in picking one up for my personal laptop but I don't know which one to get. Are there any brands in particular that are worth the investment? I've seen some completely malfunction after a few uses and others not work at all. Thanks in advance.

Many comments are inaccurate. It is not the responsibility of supply (me) to provide ANYONE, regardless of rank, with items for personal usage. PFC Mullins stated as much in his initial posting that it's for his personal laptop. It is incumbent on each individual to purchase personal items themselves. I agree with coming onto a site like this for information on making a purchase but we should not be suggesting an illegal activity, even though it may have been an inadvertent suggestion.

Like MAJ Weiss suggested, the SCMs are great CAC Readers. If you would like a very nice portable one, check out the one below. It folds up nice and neatly into about the size of a thumb drive. I have one and carry it with me. These cost $17.99 but well worth it.

SSG Burns are you referring to the pens made by the blind? If so, you can keep them. You'll not hear me looking for them.

SSG(Join to see)There are some really good points on both sides (albeit some are rude). I believe this is an issue in the eye of the beholder.
I am a Supply Sergeant as well first off. I would not/will not provide cac readers to soldiers for home use strictly because of availability in my unit. I have to file a CAPR which is a huge waste of time and money to get with GPC. And they are $70 with an NSN. So I keep to Minimum.
But on the same issue, I provide (some) paper to squad leaders for home use. I know that some may get used to print a private invoice but that happens in offices too. I write a large portion of my ncoers, counselings, and other leaders book fillers at home. So do my squad leaders. Not going to buy their ink but the paper is for the good of the corps. It is proper oversight and vigilance that prevents abuse.
I am not afraid of being called a stingy supply sergeant, but there are way too many out there that are plain dictators over supply and refuse all most all request.

Well stated, battle! I too dislike the bad labels placed on supply. It's ridiculous and unprofessional for any one of us to act in such manner. We are not only accountants (that's what we do with the CDR's property) but also stewards of the taxpayers money. I have no problem issuing out supplies as requested but I will always ask for what purpose, and make a decision based on the answer. If there are further questions, then I will seek the guidance of the BN or CO CDR, or the respective XOs.

CSMMike MaynardSSG Redondo - if the only thing that a CAC Reader allows me to do is to access government websites - OWA, AKO, MilSuite, HRC, etc, how would that be classified as 'personal' use.
I'm not aware of any 'personal' uses for the CAC readers - only work/job related and professional development related?

Your site is a lifesaver! I have been referring my Soldiers and peers there for a few years now. My only request is that you somehow procure a zip file of Lotusforms 3.5 since it's nearly impossible to get now, and version 4.0 is nearly impossible to get working. I just hope the Army switches to PDFs with a quickness.

Thanks for your reply SFC Watkins, glad to know you've been referring people my way. Are you having problems with the current download of Lotus Forms? I do recommend people use the AKO download link instead of the one for CHESS for both Lotus Forms and eSign. I haven't heard anything more on digitally signing PDFs either. I wonder if it will have something to do with the new OERs due to come out in April? We have a class the last week of this month on them. I'll to remember to bring that up. Thanks again for responding

I've never seen a unit supply issue CAC readers for personal use. If it's for your job 'at work use' then maybe, if they are available. It sounds like you few are taking home government property. I would suggest spending the few bucks you have to on the iogear reader.

Cac Card Software For Mac

Well, now that just makes....SENSE! Too easy. If we are required to have a CAC reader to do business- at home or the office, a CAC reader should be issued.

NEWS:Army migrating to Adobe fillable forms. Army Publishing Directorate were to begin conversion of the Army's inventory of existing IBM Lotus forms to PDF in the first quarter of FY 14 with a completion by the end of FY 14. Beginning in FY15, Lotus Forms and ApproveIt / eSign software will no longer be supported. This is great news for Mac users since Lotus and ApproveIt has never worked for them. Please know that the current EES system requires Lotus Forms and eSign to allow signing of OERs (currently) and NCOERs (in the future).

Installation Steps:

This generally means a lack of administrative privileges. You'll need to 'Run as Administrator' to install the program, or login as an administrator to install.

NOTE: Look under the Compressed size column, IF you see a 30KB setup file, this means you are in the zipped folder, and not the new extracted folder. Review step 6 above

9. The program does not inform you when it finishes installing, so [my personal recommendation] is to verify the software installed by going to Control Panel: Uninstall a Program (Windows 7 / 8 / Vista), Programs and Features (Vista), or Add / Remove Programs (XP) look for e-Sign Desktop 6.6.

10. Restart your computer, then come back to this page to use the Sample Form below OR save it to your desktop now.

Test your digital signature with the below links:

Note, if you are not seeing the digital signature on the PDF, make sure you have Adobe Reader installed. The Windows 8 / 8.1 built in PDF reader will not work for digitally signing.

NOTE: Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10 & 11 users need to look at slides 19-20 of this guide If not, they along with: Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera web browser users will receive 'gibberish' when clicking the Lotus Forms .xfdl link above. You need to right click the 'sample form' link and select Save Link As / Download Linked File As / Save to Download Folder. Save it to your desktop, then test from your desktop. If your computer downloads it as a .txt file, right click it and change it to .xfdl

eSign / ApproveIt Desktop enables users to approve, verify and securely print documents, forms, letters and spreadsheets. eSign / ApproveIt uses Silanis Intelligent Signature Technology, which is a form of electronic signature developed by Silanis and is based on digital signature technology. The Silanis Intelligent Signature Technology electronically signs the content of documents or forms that are presented to the user in Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Lotus Forms, PureEdge Viewer, and FormFlow. Upon signing a document or form with eSign / ApproveIt Desktop, the electronic signature and audit trail information is embedded within the structure of the document or form and becomes a permanent part of it, much like a wet ink signature on paper.
If you are interested in knowing how to digitally sign a memorandum, this is how to do it (Word 2003 & 2007 only) (Word 2010 & 2013) read the sentence below.

NOTE: If you have Office 2010 or 2013 installed you may need to configure eSign / ApproveIt to get the ApproveIt tabs back. Follow this page.

This is the email I received from APD on 25 August 2010 when I asked for permission to have an alternate download location for people when the CHESS website is down.

'In regards to your email, As I am sure you are well aware APD is the Enterprise provider of Lotus Forms Viewer and Silanis ApproveIt software. There are only two channels that are authorized to be the authoritative distributor of the fore mentioned software, 1. AGM (Army Gold Master) for GFE (Government Funded Equipment) installation / use and 2. CHESS (Computer Hardware, Enterprise Software Solutions) for PFE (Personal Funded Equipment) installation / use. APD does not authorize any other body (i.e. AKO) to distribute its Enterprise Software. Your request to have this software hosted in your files has been dually noted. At this time your request to host / provide the Lotus Forms Viewer and Silanis ApproveIt software is Denied. You will be advised if APD's stance on this request changes in the future.'

For issues obtaining the software from the CHESS website, utilize the Official Army channels for assistance.
